In the year 2012, when Stanaland was in Mexico for a competition, he got really sick. The doctors found out he had a serious disease that caused ulcers in his colon (large intestine). It was so bad that it was really risky for him to surf, which he loved. He didn’t give up, though. After spending more than 100 days in the hospital and having seven surgeries, he could surf again.

Around 2011 and 2012, Tyler Stanaland went through a really tough time with his mental health. In just a few hours, his whole life changed, and it was really hard for him. He was taken by surprise, and everything he believed in and trusted was suddenly different.
