Ben has written several books on state weather history, several articles in meteorological journals and newspapers, and an op-ed article entitled “Ben Franklin on Global Warming” for the New York Times.

After a rain gauge and temperature shelter were mounted on NBC4 in 1996-97, Ben was appointed as a cooperative weather observer for the National Weather Service in Columbus. During the annual Spring Storm Spotter Training sessions at the OSU Fawcett Center, he frequently volunteers with the Weather Service, Franklin County Emergency Management Agency, and Homeland Security. Ben is an associate meteorology teacher at Columbus State Community College and a guest lecturer in climate science at Ohio State University. In Central Ohio, he visits schools regularly to give weather presentations. He has worked as a weather consultant in the area for filming motion picture companies, big outdoor activities, and government agencies needing winter storm maintenance forecasts.

Ben founded a community music outreach ensemble specializing in klezmer melodies in 2010, Friday Night Live Music, which brings historical music throughout the year to seniors, colleges, and cultural arts programs. He is the keyboardist and in local concerts, he plays some of his piano compositions.

Ben loves giving conferences and teaching workshops on community weather, judging science fairs, and moderating science panels on topics ranging from air quality to climate change.
