He also took his pen and notepad to Lexington, Ky., Evansville, Ind., and Columbia, Mo., where at the age of 19, he started his radio career.

Hughes and his family did not hesitate to delve into the deeply diverse neighborhoods of South Florida when he joined Local 10 News. Hughes relentlessly searched for the opportunity to report comprehensively on Haiti in 2008 after reporting on a story about Haitian refugees who risked and in some cases, lost their lives on a deadly voyage set for the shores of Miami. Two years later, Hughes was well-suited to be one of Port-au-first Prince’s journalists to cover the devastation after the devastating 7.0 earthquake hit the region.

His passion and indomitable spirit for the people of Haiti led Hughes to return to Haiti more than a dozen times. The Miami New Times voted Calvin Miami’s best TV news anchor in 2011, noting that he “gracefully and professionally.” covered the story of Haiti’s earthquake. Calvin is constantly pursuing ways to introduce tales to audiences that affect our community’s soul.

He was one of only two journalists from South Florida allowed to report live on the historic trip of Pope Benedict XVI to Cuba. He also ventured away from the comfort of the anchor desk to carry live coverage of the four consecutive trips to the NBA Finals and two NBA Championships by the Miami Heat, and the 2012 Lynn University presidential debate.

Calvin has covered historic icons such as Coretta Scott King, George W. Bush, and Maya Angelou, as well as countless stories of national and international interest. In 2015, for the five-year anniversary of the earthquake, Calvin returned to Port-au-Prince, and then weeks later to Havana, where he provided live coverage of the historic diplomatic talks between the U.S. and Cuba.

Calvin returned twice that year and, prior to the official flag-raising ceremony, was the first American journalist to report live from the new American Embassy in Havana. He gave several days of live updates in September on the historic trip of Pope Francis to three cities in Cuba.

Calvin returned to Port-au-Prince in February 2016 to hold an exclusive interview in his final hours with Haiti’s outgoing President, Michel Martelly. Calvin wrote on a historic trip to Cuba by President Barack Obama in March.

For his work in the community as a speaker and volunteer, Calvin has earned several accolades, including a 2001 Southern Regional Emmy, several Emmy nominations, and multiple awards. He is a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a non-profit advisory board member of Suited for Success, a non-profit that provides economically disadvantaged men with professional apparel, and donates his time and talents almost regularly as a motivational speaker or emcee at colleges, churches, civic gatherings or charitable fundraisers across the counties of Broward and Miami-Dade.
