Hurt got his start in journalism while attending Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, where he worked for the Danville Register & Bee, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. After graduation in 1995, he got his first full-time job at The Detroit News.

He stayed at the paper until 2001 when he left to join the staff of The Charlotte Observer in Washington, D.C. Hurt spent five years as the D.C. Bureau Chief and news columnist for The New York Post, where he covered the White House. Hurt worked as a reporter for The Washington Times from 2003 to 2007, covering the US Congress before joining The New York Post.
