Cheryl McHenry Education
McHenry studied at St. Helen’s in Riverside and Carroll High School. She then joined the University of Cincinnati where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting.
During her senior year in college, she interned at WKRC radio, putting what she learnt at school to practice. In this magnitude, she learned how to write fast, develop her deliver, and meet hourly deadlines.

McHenry’s passion for journalism stems from her curiosity about the current affairs in the community, nation, and the world. While growing up, she read the newspaper and vividly recalls watching the TV news broadcast of JFK’s funeral and Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk. Taking the viewer’s trust seriously, she always aims to deliver accurate, fair, and balanced reports.
Despite not being a Miami Valley native, McHenry has called it home for most of her life. After interning at WKRC Radio as a senior in college, she worked in radio for three years at WING in Dayton and WCKY in Cincinnati, before landing a reporting job at WHIO in August 1981.
McHenry spent most of the 80s broadcasting the Dayton Police/Montgomery County Courts beat and reporting every kind of story from the local criminal justice system. She also had the chance to cover multiple major cases and influential trials. In those years, she received four regional Emmy Awards where 3 were for Spot News (now called Breaking News) including a live broadcast of a grueling police search for a teenager who was kidnapped by her mother’s killer.
One of her career highlights is being on-air for hours alongside Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs during the night of Memorial Day 2019. They warned the viewers to take cover as fifteen devastating tornadoes tore through the Miami Valley.
McHenry is proud to have worked with some of the best in the best including anchoring with Jim Baldridge, Ken Jefferson, and now James Brown. Even though she can’t name all of her co-workers who have taught her so much, she is privileged work with them every day.
Community Work
McHenry has worked as the co-host of the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon from 1987 to 2014. Further, she has worked as an MC of several community events over the years including the United Way Big Thanks volunteer breakfast, the Hundred Club, and the Dayton Defense Education Gala.
Awards and Recognition
During her career, McHenry has received several awards for her journalism work. For instance, she won an Emmy Investigative Reporting Award in 1990 for her three-part series on repeat drunk driving offenders. She won two more Emmys in 2013 for 30-minute specials that she and her co-workers produced titled “Miami Valley Murder Mysteries” and “PTSD: Invisible Wound.” PTSD: Invisible Wound increased awareness of post-traumatic stress among military combat veterans.
McHenry won two more Emmys for a special half-hour report about Dayton VA problems and another “Miami Valley Murder Mysteries.” In 2020, she won her 9th Emmy for WHIO’s braking news broadcast of the Oregon District mass shooting in 2019.
McHenry has won two Best Anchor Awards from the Ohio Associated Press and two Best Anchor Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. Twice, she worked with a WHIO team that won the Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for a 2010 30-minute special titled “Domestic Violence: Breaking the Cycle” and the 2019 Breaking News coverage of the Oregon District mass shooting.
McHenry works as a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science’s Ohio Valley Silver Circle. Further, she was inducted into the Radio/TV Broadcasters Hall of Fame of Ohio, Carroll High School’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, and the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
