Welsh started his career in baseball in college, where he played under coach Jack Butterfield. Following his college graduation, he had an important involvement in the selection process of Robin Roberts, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, as the baseball coach for the South Florida Bulls. It was during this time that Welsh had the opportunity to play his last season of collegiate baseball under the guidance of Roberts. In 1976, he also participated in collegiate summer baseball as a member of the Yarmouth Red Sox in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.
Besides being a sportscaster and pursuing a baseball career, Welsh has worked as a plastic seller. When he was just 5 years old, his father, Dan, made the decision to relocate their family to Queen City. The purpose behind this move was to establish a new office for selling plastics to molding companies located in the Midwest. This venture provided an opportunity for Dan to expand his business and serve the needs of manufacturers in the region.

Welsh had an eventful journey in his professional baseball career. In the 1976 amateur draft, he was selected by the New York Yankees in the 24th round but chose not to sign. However, in 1977, he was drafted once again by the Yankees, this time in the 21st round. He then went on to play for the Columbus Clippers, a Class AAA organization affiliated with the Yankees.
A significant moment came on March 31, 1981, when Welsh was involved in a notable six-player trade. Alongside Ruppert Jones, Joe Lefebvre, and Tim Lollar, he was traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Jerry Mumphrey and John Pacella. In his rookie season with the Padres in 1981, Welsh showcased his talent by pitching 123.7 innings, achieving a 6-7 record with a 3.78 ERA. He notably pitched four complete games, including two shutouts.
After spending two years with the Padres, Welsh was purchased by the Montreal Expos. However, on November 7, 1984, he was traded to the Texas Rangers for Dave Hostetler. With the Rangers, he maintained a 2-5 record and an ERA of 4.13.
On April 4, 1986, Welsh signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Reds, a significant move that brought him back to the Queen City. However, his time with the Reds concluded after the season, as he was released by the team on November 12. Welsh’s career encompassed various team transitions and experiences across different organizations throughout his time in Major League Baseball.
Welsh developed a distinctive and unconventional pitching delivery that set him apart from other pitchers. He was known for employing a “straight-arm” pitching style, where he would extend his left arm and deliver the ball sidearm with minimal bending of his elbow.

Welsh serves at Fox Sports Net as a Cincinnati Reds Color Analyst/Commentary and Announcer. He joined the network in the year 1993 and he now works alongside John Sadak.
On FOX Sports Net, Welsh has earned the nickname “The Crafty Left-Hander” due to his impressive skills on the baseball field. One notable moment in his career occurred on May 4, 2018, when he introduced the term “Pac-Man Ball.” He used this phrase to describe a particular pitch thrown by Cincinnati Reds pitcher Sal Romano to Lewis Brinson of the Miami Marlins. Chris compared the movement of the pitch to the iconic video game character, Pac-Man, as it seemed to devour or “eat up” Brinson’s fingers.
