Lane serves at KOCO as a Chief Meteorologist for KOCO 5 First Alert Weather. He is the only Chief Meteorologist in the city of Oklahoma to hold The American Meteorological Society’s seal of approval. This is the highest level certification from Oklahoma’s top association for broadcast meteorologists. Also, Lane is the only Chief Meteorologist in Oklahoma City to hold a degree in Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences. He and the First Alert Weather team were certified independently by an independent scientific organization, WeatheRate, as the most accurate forecast deliverers. The organization works on measuring accuracy in weather forecasts across Oklahoma State.
Lane has worked for ABC’s Good Morning America as a guest meteorologist. He has also served as an often featured speaker at weather conferences across Oklahoma State, where he shared his experience and forecasted one of Oklahoma’s most active weather regions. He was featured in “In An Instant,” a nationally televised ABC 20/20 primetime special in the year 2016. There he was sharing his personal experiences covering the 2013 tornado outbreak that affected Moore, Oklahoma. As he covered the tornado live on-air, it struck his own neighborhood. His nearby homes were destroyed and damaged while his wife rode out the storm in their shelter with the family dogs. Ever since he has been active and supporting the efforts of community recovery. He was nominated for covering the tornado.
Before joining KOCO, he worked for KTXS-TV in Abilene, Texas as a Chief Meteorologist, where he forecasted severe weather on the southern edge of “Tornado Alley.” While at KTXS, he was named “Abilene’s Favorite Meteorologist” for 3 consecutive years. When he is not at work, he likes having fun out in the elements, going on a hike, or even skiing in the winter. Also, one can find him firing up the barbeque at home (he makes the world’s best “jalapeno poppers.”)
