Bates serves at KOCO as a weekend meteorologist for the First Alert weather. Before joining KOCO, she served at KFSM-TV (CBS Affiliate) in Fort Smith, Arkansas as a weekend meteorologist. Also, she worked as a weekday science reporter. There she was mostly based in eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas, covering record-breaking weather events such as a nighttime EF-2 tornado as it tracked over 30 miles. In the year 2019, she covered the historic Arkansas River flooding.

Before Bates joined KOCO, she was already used to forecasting the weather in Oklahoma. She used to cover a number of counties in eastern Oklahoma and would track conditions across the rest of Oklahoma State to prepare viewers for any severe weather. Bates has an experience with blizzards, severe storms, tornadoes, – you name it. 

Bates is passionate about STEM science education. She started a weekly series that gets kids excited about learning using hands-on science. She has been passionate about the weather since she was young. Bates got hooked on severe weather when she was a participant in a Convective Field Study during college when she and her team were intercepting 4 tornadoes during the 10-day storm chase in the Southern Plains. During her leisure, she likes going on hikes in Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains, exploring both state and national parks, or just basically being active outside.
