He got his start at a radio station in Fresno, California, shortly after he graduated from high school. From there, he moved to B-100 FM in San Diego, where he worked as a weeknight weathercaster. He then began working as a weekend weathercaster for Channel 8. 

After two years, Romero went to work for KCOP-TV in Los Angeles, California. He spent 7 years there working as a prime-time weathercaster. While at KCOP, he won 3 Emmy Awards for his work. After that, he was hired at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, California, as a meteorologist.
