Owens is working for WHTM as a news anchor and the State Capitol reporter. Since joining the station, he has held many different roles at the station. He started as a weekend sports anchor under Sports Director, Gregg Mace.
As ABC27’s weekend sports anchor, Owens covered Bowl Games, Super Bowls, World Series, baseball’s Spring Training, NASCAR races, and Penn State football. However, he held the most pride in co-developing Friday Night Football, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021. Friday Night Football follows high school athletes, cheerleaders, and bands that make Friday nights special across Central Pennsylvania
In 1999, Owens transitioned to news and began co-anchoring Live at Five. He displayed his love of the Midstate and his warmth and personality by doing activities such as jumping out of airplanes, learning to make Easter eggs, or attending the local fair. He later began anchoring First with Valerie Pritchett at 7 p.m. and then with Alicia Richards at 6 p.m.
A passionate storyteller and journalist, Owens has received over 70 Regional Emmy Awards nominations, winning 15 of those nominations including for Best Anchor in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Additionally, he won the Edward R. Murrow Award for his report on the effects of lobbyists in Harrisburg.
Owens is one of the most respected and recognized reporters at the State Capitol. His reports on the state government air daily on Nexstar-owned stations across the commonwealth.
Aside from anchoring, Owens works as the host and co-producer of This Week in Pennsylvania. On the show, he has had guests such as governors, senators, congressmen and women, and the who’s-who of political powerbrokers in Pennsylvania.
