Murnaghan served Sky News in various positions since joining Sky News in 2007, until the end of February 2023. Previously, he served Independent Television News, BBC News, and CNBC Europe as a news presenter. Further, he has presented various news shows since joining Sky till his departure.
When he moved to Sky News he shared this role with Jeremy Vine. While on Sky News, he presented his own show entitled Murnaghan from January 2011 until December 2016. The show aired on Sunday mornings from 10 AM until 12 noon. From September 2016, he has served as the anchor for Sky News Tonight from Monday to Thursday.
He hosted the Sky News’ overnight coverage, entitled The Brexit Election for the 2019 United Kingdom general election. In addition, before Jeremy Vine took over presenting the BBC quiz show Eggheads, he served as its host from 2003 to 2014.
Before he joined Channel 4 News as a researcher, he worked as a trainee reporter for local newspapers, and not long after he reporter for the Business Programme. Before being recalled by ITN to present the World News on Channel 4 Daily he presented the European Business Channel.
He worked at ITV where he anchored programs like; News at Ten, and ITV Lunchtime News. In addition, he also anchored the ITV Nightly News, the ITV Evening News when ITV relaunched its news output in 1999. In addition, in 2001, he worked on ITV’s general election coverage.
He replaced Jeremy Bowen as the main anchor for BBC Breakfast from September 2002 to December 2007. He worked alongside Natasha Kaplinsky, Kate Silverton, Susanna Reid, Sian Williams, and Sophie Raworth. An announcement was made in October 2007, that he would be leaving BBC to join Sky News and he was the second anchor to depart the station. His last episode on Breakfast was on December 20, 2007. He had previously anchored the BBC Two daytime show Eggheads as from 2003 to 2014, and Are You an Egghead? series in 2008 and 2009.
