Dr. Greg Forbes Career

Forbes serves at The Weather Channel as a long-time severe weather expert. He has a significant research background in the areas of severe convective storms and tornadoes. The Weather Channel TOR: CON forecast, an index designed to predict the probability of tornado occurrence within a given time span within 50 miles of a venue, was created by Dr. Forbes. TOR: CON ratings on The Weather Channel network and its streaming assets are an exclusive and integral aspect of extreme weather coverage.

When his 7th-grade class learned a module on meteorology, Dr. Forbes developed an interest in the atmosphere. Dr. Forbes worked as a field manager for Project NIMROD, the first measurement program to research destructive thunderstorm winds from downbursts and microbursts, after graduating from college. He then joined the faculty of the meteorology department at Penn State in 1978, where before entering The Weather Channel in June 1999, he taught classes in weather research and forecasting, natural disasters, and other subjects.

Outside of the school, Dr. Forbes has had a lot of encounters, including surveying the destruction paths left by nearly 300 tornadoes and windstorms, including Hurricane Andrew and Typhoon Paka. He was the chief weather forecaster for various field testing projects across the world as part of his research at Penn State.

Forbes was the forecaster in Sweden for a NASA experiment to assess the North Polar ozone hole in the 1999-2000 winter extreme weather ” off-season ‘. He has done joint research and consultancy in the United States with the National Weather Service and in South Africa, Spain, and the Netherlands with the national weather services, where he watched a small tornado go through his backyard. He spent three summers at the Kennedy Space Center conducting experiments to develop lightning forecasting.

Forbes has written several articles on tornadoes, extreme thunderstorms, and other meteorological themes, and has co-authored and co-edited books on the use of satellite and radar imagery in weather forecasting, Natural and Technical Hazards, and Photographs of Weather Forecasting. He is a fellow of the Society of American Meteorology.
