She has held this role since September 2022, when she was working part-time, but started full-time after college, in the year 2023. She started as a Gray Future Focus Intern at KEYC-TV for 5 months (from May 2022 to September 2022). While in college, Merz interned at Nashville Severe Weather for a year (May 2021 – May 2022), and served at Old Navy in Collierville, Tennessee as a Brand Associate for 3 and half years (July 2018 – January 2022).
Merz says that her favorite part of her job is covering severe weather. She finds it thrilling because it’s fast-paced and sometimes unpredictable. Keeping her community safe during dangerous weather is really important to her. Her dream story is doing a weather report live from Antarctica! As a child, she loved flying in airplanes and dreamed of becoming a pilot.
Merz’s interest in weather began in her childhood in Minnesota, where she lived near a park with a tornado siren. Although she wasn’t scared of thunderstorms, she was terrified of the noises the sirens made. In first grade, she got a box set of weather books from a school book fair and became fascinated with tornadoes and lightning. This interest continued when she moved to Mississippi and experienced many tornado seasons.
She fell in love with journalism in high school, especially when she joined the school newspaper and broadcasting club. Combining her passions for writing, journalism, broadcasting, and weather, she decided to become a broadcast meteorologist. And she still has the box set of weather books on her bookshelf!
