Chau herself was born on June 25 of that year in a refugee camp located in Thailand.
Eventually, a Vietnamese Catholic church in New Orleans, made arrangements for a local Vietnamese family to sponsor Chau’s family, allowing them to move to the United States. Growing up, Chau was speaking Vietnamese as her 1st language. She learned English in school. Her family resided in government housing and relied on subsidized lunch programs for support.
Chau’s parents worked as dishwashers initially and later operated a convenience store. They worked hard to provide their children with the opportunity to attend college. Chau has shared that her father and mother, who spoke with strong Vietnamese accents, experienced discrimination and were treated poorly as Asian immigrants. She has expressed that throughout her life, she often felt more accepted than her parents, who had to remain in the background or conceal their presence as if hiding in a broom closet.

To address her introversion, Chau enrolled in public speaking classes, which eventually led her to explore improv classes. It was during this time that she had an encounter with a sitcom TV director who encouraged her to relocate to Los Angeles and stay in touch. Inspired by this encounter, Chau made the decision to move to LA and actively pursue acting opportunities in the entertainment industry.
