Jason joined the KVUE Storm team as the weekend Daybreak meteorologist in January 2018. Further, he served as the chief meteorologist at WLIO in Lima, Ohio, before moving to Austin. Initially, he started as a weekend meteorologist in April 2016 and was promoted to chief meteorologist in December of that year.
Also, he did two internships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with the National Weather Service and WTXF. He was born and raised in Columbia, Mississippi. Prior to launching a career in meteorology, Mikell worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a corporate recruiter for a healthcare staffing agency and also the creative industry.
Having grown up in South Mississippi, he was always devoted to his fascination and love of severe weather due to living first-hand through some of the nation’s most memorable and threatening storms: Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy, and Hurricane Rita. Also, he lived through the city’s second, third, and fourth biggest snowstorms on record while in Philadelphia.
Further, he has had the rare opportunity to engage in three different storm damage survey evaluations with the National Weather Service in the summer of 2015, with one of the storms spawning an EF-1 tornado in the Honey Brook, Pennsylvania region. His dedication to weather knowledge, preparedness, and precision while forecasting for thousands of Americans watching and listening to his forecasts was fueled by these experiences.
Additionally, he has met and learned from meteorologists from all over the world at various American Meteorological Society conferences, and he has received mentorships with scientists at some of the nation’s top TV markets including The Weather Channel. Mikell has won several awards throughout his life.
For instance, a State Championship, raising over $7,500 for the American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink initiative for breast cancer, the Ohio School Boards Association Media Honor Roll, and even the Best Handwriting Contest. Also, he serves as a member of the Gamma Theta Upsilon, Phi Theta Kappa, American Meteorological Society, and National Weather Association fraternities.
