Jenni Lee Career
The veteran journalist has worked in the Austin television market since 2001, but she began her career in 1994, well before graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated the next year, fell in love with Austin, and promised herself that she would return to the Capital City one day.
Jenni returned to Austin in 2001 after six years at KBTX-TV in Bryan and College Station, where she worked as a weekend anchor at a rival station. Jenni has been reporting and covering critical news in our culture and around the world for more than 20 years. Several organizations have praised her work, including the Lone Star Emm; the Texas Associated Press of Broadcasters: the Texas Associated Press of Broadcasters; the Lone Star Emmy Chapter (during a stint for the City of Austin;) the American Cancer Society; the Diversity Council and the Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities.
The most recent award came in 2017 from the Radio Television Digital News Association, which gave her the coveted Edward R. Murrow Award for a story titled “Border Body Farm.” It took first place in Region 6 of the Hard News Large Market Television Division, which includes Texas and Oklahoma.
But it’s her 7th place ribbon in gymnastics for her beam routine in the 8th-grade regional competition that she recalls the most. A misstep knocked the 13-year-old off the balance beam and nearly to the ground after weeks of practice. Instead, she clung to the contraption she was meant to be performing on, arms and legs wrapped around it for dear life. In a gymnasium brimming with laughter, that eventually turned to applause, she climbed her way back upright and finished the routine.
