Mertens serves at KCRG as an evening news anchor, appearing on the 4, 6, and 10 PM newscasts alongside Beth Malicki. He has also been working as a Public Affairs Host of “The Cities” on WQPT since November 2010. Before joining KCRG, he worked for WQAD-TV (ABC) in Moline, Illinois as News Anchor from February 1995 to May 2022.
From January 2007 to March 2012, he took on the role of a News Announcer at KUUL-FM, a morning drive-time “oldies” station serving eastern Iowa and western Illinois. His career led him to WWMT-TV News Channel 3 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in May 1989, where he worked as a News Anchor and Reporter for 5 years and 10 months.
Mertens began his journey in radio as an Announcer at WFON-FM, where he worked for 2 years and 7 months from March 1978 to September 1980. Following his radio experience, he ventured into radio announcing and news reporting at WAXX-WAYY Radio on a part-time basis. He held this position for 1 year and 8 months, from October 1980 to May 1982 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In June 1982, Mertens transitioned to television as an Evening News Anchor and Reporter at WEAU 13 News, where he spent 7 years covering news stories. From there, he now joined WWMT.
Mertens serves as a board member of the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association. He has served at the Northwest Broadcast News Association and the Iowa Broadcast News Association as the president. When it comes to his education, Mertens is a proud alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he attended from 1980 to 1984. He graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. During his leisure time, he likes rooting for his favorite sports teams: the Green Bay Packers and the Brewers.
