“For his work on the month-long investigative series” Building Homes: Building Problems, “Jim received journalism’s most prestigious honor, the George Foster Peabody Award. The report detailed issues with new home construction in central Florida. He was awarded an Alfred I, as well. The Edward R. Murrow Award for his work on the WESH 2 News documentary “Code Blue: Crisis in the ER”; several awards from the Associated Press and Radio Television Digital News Association; the Jefferson Award for Public Service; the President’s Award for Voluntary Service; and several Emmys. The DuPont Award for his work on the space shuttle Columbia tragedy.

He has also been named by Orlando Magazine as part of Orlando’s Best TV News Team. For more than a decade, Jim has worked as a member of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics Florida, helping to raise money for the Orlando Edgewood Children’s Ranch. His most prominent community service project, however, takes place annually; the Jim Payne Fearless 5k for the Children raises cash for Kids House, a non-profit organization that supports abuse victims. When coming to his education, Payne attended Purdue University, where he earned a communications bachelor’s degree. Before switching to WESH, Payne worked at WRAL-TV, the then-CBS affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina.
