Barr joined Queen City News in June 2021. He began his career in the Myrtle Beach-Florence market at WBTW’s Lumberton, NC bureau in 2006. After a quick promotion to senior reporter and investigator at WBTW’s Myrtle Beach headquarters, Jody broke significant investigations, including uncovering the state’s lapses in tracking released sex offenders and exposing the attempted cover-up of a distemper outbreak at the Horry County Animal Shelter.

Later on, he moved to WIS TV in Columbia in June 2009, where he led the station’s investigative unit and reported on public corruption, earning accolades such as the South Carolina Reporter of the Year in 2013. Jody’s investigative career extended to Ohio when he accepted a promotion to lead Raycom Media’s investigative efforts at WIS TV’s sister station in Cincinnati in June 2014.

During his time there, he uncovered government waste and corruption, exposed a sheriff’s negligence in a high-profile murder investigation, and revealed practices in construction projects and tax collection failures. In July 2017, Jody took on an investigative reporter role at Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Austin, TX.

There, he uncovered failures in red-light camera installations across 60 Texas cities, resulting in a statewide red-light camera ban. His investigation into the financial ties of the Texas Railroad Commission’s chairwoman earned him the 2019 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.

Jody’s achievements in Texas included two Emmy awards, recognition as an Investigative Reporters and Editors Medalist Finalist, multiple Headliners Foundation awards, a Society of Professional Journalists First Amendment Award, and a 2020 Edward R. Murrow Award.

Before entering the news industry, Jody worked as a chassis fabricator and welder, contributing to the NASCAR Busch Series team in Timmonsville, SC, in 2003 and 2004. He also owned and raced street stocks and built his late model stock car, competing in local asphalt tracks in NC, SC, VA, TN, and GA from 1998 through 2008.

Jody’s passion lies in exposing government corruption and wasteful use of taxpayer dollars.
