Joe Furey Career

He attended Central Catholic High School and worked most of his high school/early college years at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk, Connecticut where he grew up. He graduated from Villanova University and in addition, he studied Meteorology and graduated at Western Connecticut State University. Later on, he proceeded to become a graduate assistant/ teacher and in due time, he became assistant director of Western Connecticut State University Weather Center in Danbury under Dr. Mel Goldstein.

After some time he moved to The New England Weather Service in Hartford where he did daily weather forecasting to such clients as Northeast Utilities while working as the director. His first job on Tv was at NEWS12 Connecticut whereby he worked at many radio stations including WAVZ, WICC, and KC101. Later on, he relocated to Hartford.

He loves playing baseball and he played competitive baseball all the way to his 50’s. Additionally, he is a huge fan of Yankee. One of his most loved stories is when Dr. Mel put him in charge of setting up their big-brand new weather data recording station on the roof above the weather office at WCSU, as the weather is his favorite hobby.  A few weeks later Hurricane Gloria turned up. When the anemometer registered an 83 mph wind gust, they were all so happy, and, later on, the weather station flew past the window they were looking out of and smashed on the ground. This made Dr. Mel angry at him as he had forgotten to secure the roof.

In addition one of his other favorite stories is when he forecasted 1 inch of snow and we got 1 foot, later on, the next morning, a bucket of snow landed on his head while he was doing the weather live on TV. He also is inspired to talk about the weather and other stuff to schools across Connecticut.

His grandparents originated from Newfoundland, Canada, they would sleep with an open window during winter. They would also speak about icebergs that went by their house in St John’s, Newfoundland which most likely inspired his love for weather. His grandparents also had stories about times in winter when the snow was so deep and drifted so the only way out of the house was from a second-floor window.

His favorite dish is firestorm nachos, but when it comes to deciding on his favorite restaurant in New Haven he can not yet come to a decision hence he is always willing for anyone to take him out to their favorite restaurant and he will pay.

1978, concert at the Yale Bowl for the Eagles/Little River Band and Hear was his second-best concert. Additionally, Billy Joel is his favorite musician. When it comes to travel he has been to all 48 United States with his wife and kids and, he is looking forward to traveling to Canada, Ireland, Alaska, Hawaii, and Newfoundland. He says he’s a pretty good baseball player and can run/sprint pretty fast because of his size.
