Carlin joined the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1979 after completing his studies at Dolgeville Central High School. In 1983, he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor Of Arts degree in Mass Communications and a Canadian Studies minor. Carlin worked with the WSLS 10 team that won a Peabody Award for broadcasting the Virginia Tech mass shooting on April 16, 2007. During his time as lead anchor, the team won three national Edward R. Murrow Awards.

Carlin has won five Emmys for his reporting work and many awards from the RTNDA, Virginia Association of Broadcasters, and Associated Press. The Associated Press of the Virginias granted him their 2015 Best News Anchor of the Year Award. Further, he received the George Bowles Award for distinguished service in broadcasting from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters.
