Vance is well-known for having worked as a US Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama for 8 years (2009 to 2017).

During her 10 years in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office, she worked on various investigations, including the case of Eric Robert Rudolph, who was responsible for bombing a Birmingham abortion clinic, as well as committing other crimes.
Vance prosecuted a case involving 5 police officers from Boaz, Alabama, who were charged with ‘Conspiracy to Violate Civil Rights’. In the year 2002, she transitioned to the Appellate Division and later became the Chief of that Division in the year 2005. United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama
In May 2009, she was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate to become the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. She was sworn in on August 27, 2009, alongside Eric Holder, who served as the United States Attorney General at the time. Shortly after her appointment, she was selected by Attorney General Holder to join his first Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of United States Attorneys, where she co-chaired the Criminal Practice Subcommittee with Tristram Coffin, the United States Attorney for Vermont.
In 2011, she led the prosecution of the first case involving material support of terrorism in the Northern District of Alabama. The defendant, Ulugbek Kodirov, pleaded guilty the following year to charges of threatening to kill the President and providing material support to terrorism. He received a sentence of over fifteen years in prison. Her commitment to prosecuting public corruption cases with integrity earned her recognition, and these cases remained a top priority for her office.
Fraud cases were also a priority for her, and she pursued several notable prosecutions in this area. One such case involved Jonathan Dunning, who was prosecuted for a $14 million fraud scheme that diverted funds intended for healthcare for low-income individuals. Additionally, she handled a series of cases related to fraud in car loan origination.
Following the devastating tornadoes that struck Alabama in April 2011, causing widespread damage, she took a firm stance against disaster fraud. In April 2014, she successfully prosecuted a group of five individuals who conspired to make fraudulent claims totaling $2.4 million against the BP Oil Deepwater Horizon compensation fund.
