Before joining NBC News, she worked in Cleveland, Ohio at WJW-TV as an anchor and reporter (in the 1990s). When WJW was still a CBS station in Cleveland, she worked with former NBC reporter Martin Savidge.
Before The Chris Matthews Show was canceled, O’Donnell served as a regular panelist on the show. Not only did she serve as a news anchor and substitute host on the Weekend Today program but also on the weekend edition of Nightly News as a substitute host. Furthermore, on the primetime news magazine Dateline NBC, she has contributed reports. During George W. Bush’s second term, she served as a White House correspondent for NBC News. Later on, she became Capitol Hill correspondent following the 2008 presidential campaign season.
She has covered the Bush Administration, and a couple of presidential campaigns, including most recently John McCain’s in 2008. She was the first journalist to report live on television that Donald Trump was called over the phone to concede the presidential election by Hillary Clinton in 2016. Additionally, she was embedded with the 3rd Infantry Division, stationed in Baghdad and Qatar during the Iraq war.
She has reported on a wide variety of events such as the space shuttle Columbia disaster, the O.J. Simpson trial, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the September 11 attacks. Furthermore, she reported on both the summer and winter Olympic Games and on the travels and death of Pope John Paul II.
In 2011, she was inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame, and in 2004, she was inducted into the Ohio Radio/Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In her career as a journalist, she has received many honors such as Emmy awards, a New Hampshire Primary Award for Political Reporting, Los Angeles Press Club awards, and a National Headliner Award.
