Her journey took an unexpected turn when she traveled to Port Huron, Michigan, to minister for Pastor William T. Nichols and his wife, an experience that would profoundly impact her life.
Bynum returned to Chicago in the year 1990 and embarked on a career as a hairdresser, determined to leave behind government aid. However, her path soon led her to New York, where she found work as a flight attendant for Pan American Airways. Unfortunately, the company ceased operations in 1991. Bynum shared with “Essence” magazine that many of her friends saw the collapse of Pan Am as a divine message, signaling her calling to become a preacher. Despite sensing God’s calling, she initially resisted accepting it.
While in New York, Bynum became part of a new church community and resumed her role as a minister. It was in the year 1996 that she encountered a man who would play a pivotal role in her journey to becoming a renowned prophetess. Bishop T.D. Jakes, a Pentecostal evangelist, invited her to attend a singles conference in Dallas, unaware of her personal story. This invitation, according to “Essence”, was a result of Jakes’s obedience to God’s guidance. Jakes’s obedience proved to be the turning point for Bynum’s meteoric rise to national prominence.
Just two years after attending the singles’ conference, she transitioned from being an attendee to a keynote speaker. In 1998, she delivered a powerful message titled “No More Sheets” to a crowd of 17,000 people, predominantly women, eliciting a fervent response of praise and deliverance.
“No More Sheets” became a testimony of Bynum’s personal struggles with sexuality and her journey toward purification. With unflinching honesty, she connected with the audience, emphasizing that being “single” does not merely refer to marital status but rather signifies freedom from the remnants of past relationships. Bynum urged the crowd to create space in their lives for new connections, emphasizing the need to let go of attachments from the past in order to embrace new possibilities.
