Lighty is working for WCIA as the chief meteorologist. In this role, he forecasts on the 5, 6, 9, and 10 p.m. newscasts. While growing up, he watched the station and was a weather watcher for Judy Fraser when he was just a teenager.
As a child, Lighty used to pretend to be a TV weatherman shooting weather videos with his parents’ camcorder as storms neared. It was fate that he would achieve his dream of becoming a real meteorologist.
Lighty started spotting storms for the National Weather Service in Indianapolis as he grew older. When he was 17, he launched his broadcasting career working as a radio DJ in Danville at 94.9 K-Rock and D-102 at the age of 17
Lighty first experienced TV weather broadcasting when he was in college. He secured his first paying TV job at WTHI Channel 10 in Terre Haute. He worked there as a weather anchor for over three years.
Following his time in Terre Haute, Lighty moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he was a morning meteorologist and storm chaser at WKYT for 2 years. He then worked as a fill-in for weather at WRTV in Indianapolis.
Lighty moved to Springfield, Missouri in July 2007 to serve KSPR as the chief meteorologist. He held that position for 10 years. During this time, he accomplished numerous things like broadcasting the Joplin EF-5 tornado, storm chasing with the Vortex 2 research team, and winning 7 Best Weathercast in Missouri awards and two Emmy nominations.
Lighty worked with a team to broadcast the night of the 2012 Branson Leap Day tornadoes. For that broadcast, they won a national Edward R. Murrow award. Lighty has the seal of approval from the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.
Lighty really enjoys storm chasing when he has the chance. Over the last 10 years, he has witnessed many tornadoes while chasing in the Plains. On a side note, his hobbies include DJing at weddings and parties.
A certified FAA commercial drone pilot, Lighty has shot numerous drone weather-related videos that have gained national features over the past year. He also works as a ham radio operator, call sign WX9KSL.
