He won three Emmy nominations for Best Weathercast. The Tennessee Associated Press granted him Best Weathercast in 2006.

Readers of the Nashville Scene & The Tennessean chose him as the Favorite Weather Anchor in Reader’s Polls for every paper. Statom’s interest in weather can be traced back to when he was in the 7th grade. He even had a weather center in his backyard when he was in middle school. He began his TV career in Knoxville, serving WVLT(previously known as WTVK), and then worked at WATE. In Knoxville, he held several roles including producer, photojournalist, tape editor, and weekend assignment editor.

Statom also worked with Black Entertainment Television News while he was in Knoxville. In 1990, he relocated to Bristol where he worked as a weekend weather anchor and reporter at WCYB. Previously, he was a Black Achiever with the YMCA. He also worked on boards for the TN 4-H Foundation, TSU Cooperative Extension, First Steps, UT-Knoxville AG Institute, and Youth Encouragement Services.

Active in the community, Statom volunteers with TN & Davidson Co. 4-H. He is also on the boards of Northwest YMCA, Middle TN Boy Scouts, Laughter is the Best Medicine, Cornerstone Financial Credit Union, and the Board of Visitors for UTK College of Communication & Information. Moreover, he speaks to thousands of school students every year throughout Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.

Statom served two terms on the Davidson Co. Agricultural Extension Committee after he was appointed by Former Metro Nashville Mayor, Bill Purcell, & the Metro Council. He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Moreover, he holds the Seal Of Approval from both organizations. He serves as a member of 100 Black Men of Middle TN and is the president of the Nashville Assoc. of Black Journalists.
