Marella Porter Career
Porter serves at Local 12 News – WKRC as a weekend news anchor and weekday news reporter. Before joining the station, she worked for WALA-TV in Mobile, Alabama as a News Reporter, Multimedia Journalist, and Fill-in News Anchor for 2 years. Before that, she served at KCWY-TV in Casper, Wyoming as an Evening News Anchor, Producer, and Multimedia Journalist.
From an early age, Porter had a passion for storytelling. Living in Central Florida, whenever there were power outages caused by hurricanes, her family would gather in the living room. It was during these moments that young Porter would take on the role of a weather reporter. She used flashlights as her spotlights. Her family eagerly listened as she “reported” on the weather, showcasing her natural talent for storytelling even in challenging circumstances.
Porter began her journalism journey at KCWY in Casper, Wyoming. Despite being in the least populous state in America, the region compensated for its low population with the awe-inspiring beauty of the Mountain West. Porter experienced firsthand the power of nature when she encountered her first Wyoming snow at the end of May, truly understanding the concept of wind chill.
Her timing couldn’t have been better as she moved to Casper just in time for the remarkable event of the Total Solar Eclipse in the year 2017. Porter also had the incredible opportunity to report on this once-in-a-lifetime moment when the city and the state plunged into darkness.
During Porter’s stint in the Deep South, she reported on the busiest hurricane season ever recorded, with numerous storms targeting the Gulf Coast in the year 2020. While working at WALA, she also covered the unprecedented impact of the pandemic on the carnival season, leading to the cancellation of parades in Port City for the first time since the ’40s.
Porter’s deeply significant and unforgettable moment was witnessing the remarkable journey of John Lewis (the late Congressman). Shortly after his casket was solemnly carried by a horse-drawn carriage across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, she had the privilege of covering from Montgomery. The Edmund Pettus Bridge is the symbolic site of the “Bloody Sunday” civil rights march.
Multiple individuals came together in Montgomery to honor the legacy of this civil rights icon, as his casket lay in the Alabama State Capitol before its final journey to Washington, D.C. This historic occasion marked Lewis as the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the United States Capitol Rotunda, leaving an indelible impact on Porter’s memory.

Porter has made significant contributions to various charitable causes and organizations. One notable organization she supported is Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, where she dedicated her time and effort as a Big Sister for a year and five months, from February 2020 to June 2021. Additionally, she has actively participated in the Greater Cincinnati Association of Black Journalists. There she served as an executive board member, promoting diversity and representation within the field of journalism. Since January 2023, she has been continuing her advocacy for underrepresented voices as a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
