Mark Baden Career and Education

Baden is a proud 1992 alumnus of Western Illinois University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Meteorology. In regard to his profession, Baden serves at WISN 12 News as a chief meteorologist. He worked for WOI-TV in Ames, Iowa as a chief meteorologist for 2 years and 10 months (from June 1994 – March 1997) prior to joining WISN-TV.

Over the years of his journalism career, he has reported on many weather stories both nationally and locally. He provided lie coverage of the July 22nd floods, and he was the 1st one to announce that Interstate 43 in Glendale was closed due to 4 feet of water. He saw a mattress washed across Port Washington Road and witnessed a police officer rescuing a pregnant mother and her child from a flooded car. Baden has also reported on 2 hurricanes for WISN: Hurricane Rita in Beaumont, Texas (in the year 2005) and Hurricane Frances in Cocoa Beach, Florida (in the year 2004). Additionally, he has reported on destructive tornadoes in Kansas City, MO; Utica, NY; Hartford, CT; and Illinois.

Baden is always in the studio whenever severe weather hits, but he says that he enjoys seeing it up close. He has chased many storms across the Great Plains and the Midwest. However, Baden jokingly says he is the world’s worst storm chaser because he has yet to see a tornado! Baden’s passion for the weather began when he was little and he says that it’s still there and growing.

Throughout his career, he has been honored with several awards and honors for his incredible work. In the year 2008, he was recognized with a regional and local Emmy Award for remarkable flood coverage. In the following year, he was awarded the best weathercast award by the Wisconsin Broadcaster’s Association. Milwaukee Magazine has named Baden and his WISN team “the most accurate local forecast crew”.
