DeRosa is a proud alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in Philadelphia, where he majored in management and marketing. During his stint there, he was part of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the baseball and football teams. He had his high school studies at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey.
During his first year in college (1994), he was chosen as the starting quarterback for the Quakers. He did a fantastic job, leading them to a perfect season and winning an Ivy League championship. He repeated this success in the year 1995 with another Ivy League championship. Throughout his college football career, he made 25 touchdown passes and threw for 3,895 yards, making him among the best quarterback in the school’s history.
At the same time, he also played shortstop on the college baseball team. In the year 1995, DeRosa spent the summer playing baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Bourne Braves. Originally, DeRosa was expected to be a backup player, but he became the team’s main 3rd baseman when Troy Glaus left to play for a national team. He batted over .300, which is pretty impressive, and he was even chosen for the league’s All-Star team.

DeRosa was in MLB for 15 years (from 1998 to 2013). He played for different teams during his career: the Atlanta Braves from 1998 to 2004, the Chicago Cubs from 2007 to 2008, the Texas Rangers from 2005 to 2006, the Cleveland Indians in the year 2009, the San Francisco Giants from 2010 to 2011, the Toronto Blue Jays in 2013, the St. Louis Cardinals also in the year 2009, and the Washington Nationals in the year 2012. Most of the time, DeRosa played as a 2nd baseman or a 3rd baseman, but he also started in almost every other position on the field, except for center field, catcher, and pitcher.
Before the 2007 season, DeRosa signed a 3-year deal with the Chicago Cubs. He played a lot in the year 2007, a total of 149 games, and then the same number in the year 2008. In the same year, he hit more than 20 home runs (21), which was a 1st for him. After that, he was traded to the Indians in the year 2009 and later in the season to the Cardinals. He had a great year with 23 home runs, but he hurt his left wrist. Surgery to fix it didn’t work well, and it caused him problems when he played for the Giants in 2010 and 2011. In the year 2012, he appeared in 48 games with the Nationals. Then, in the year 2013, he reached a milestone by hitting his 100th career home run while playing for the Blue Jays before retiring after the season.
