In September 1942, when she was 16 and McPherson was 19, his mother, Kathleen “Kit” (née Daugherty; 1925–2003), and his biological father, Newton Searles McPherson (1923–1970), married. Within days, the marriage fell apart. He is of descent from English, German, Scottish, and Scots-Irish.
In 1946, Robert Gingrich (1925–1996) married his mother, who adopted him. Robert Gingrich, who served tours in Korea and Vietnam, was a career army officer. The family moved to Europe in 1956, living in Orléans, France, and Stuttgart, Germany, for a period. Gingrich has three of his mother’s younger half-sisters, Candace and Susan Gingrich, plus Roberta Brown.
In Hummelstown (near Harrisburg) and on military bases where his adoptive father was stationed, Gingrich was raised. The religion of the family was Lutheran. He also has a half-sister and half-brother from his biological father’s side, Randy McPherson. During his junior year of high school, the family moved to Fort Benning in Georgia in 1960.

Gingrich started an affair with House of Representatives staffer Callista Bisek in 1993, while still married to Marianne. In 1999, a few months after she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Gingrich filed for divorce from Marianne. Four months after his divorce, he married Callista. In 2011, Gingrich told a Christian community that “things happened in my life that was not appropriate”
