Ferro is a Chief Meteorologist currently working for WSVN 7 News and thus responsible for the provision of the latest weather updates and warnings on local forecasts. He leads a four-person team that works 24 hours a day keeping an eye on South Florida’s skies and giving clear information during most hurricane seasons.
Ferro participated in the memorable team that flew into the hurricane that moved backward across the Caribbean in the year 1999. Hurricane Lenny came as a shock to many for its uniqueness which had never happened for centuries at the Atlantic tropical cyclone record.
It was the first hurricane that had an extended west-to-east track and Ferro was its first witness. He constantly takes classes from NOAA in order to keep his forecasting skills sharp. Asides from this, he has completed training on community hurricane preparedness from FEMA.
Ferro has reported on South Florida weather and hurricanes for decades. He began his career in 1995 at the local Telemundo affiliate where he served as the lead forecaster providing information to the Spanish-speaking community regarding the latest storms.
Ferro’s passion for education has led to him caring about teaching young minds about the weather. He also helps teachers to pass to their students the wonders of science and meteorology. Ferro received 2 Emmy nominations for his coverage of the Hurricane specials. Additionally, Ferro holds both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association Seals of Approval.
Ferro is a proud member of the Board of Broadcast meteorology, the AMS standing panel of Spanish-language evaluators by the AMS commission of Professional Affairs. He was also awarded the professional development hours award from the National Hurricane Center each year since 1995. Apparently, Ferro also appears on the NWA board.
Ferro has gained several recognitions in different platforms that include individual recognition by the City of Hialeah, the Miami Dade County League of Cities, and the Association for Women in Communications South Florida chapter.
He advises the American Red Cross where he gets the message of advance preparation for Hurricane season. Ferro currently anchors the weeknights weather forecasts for WSVN at 4:00 pm, 4:30 pm, 5:00 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm, 6:30 pm, 10:00 pm, and 11:00 pm.
