He has been watching the weather both professionally and non-professionally for over 50 years. Rick was fascinated by the weather when he was just five years old. “When I was 12, I started forecasting weather for my parents and others. We didn’t have much technology back then, so I had to rely on reading the clouds.”
Rick began his public service career at the age of 14 by reporting rainfall levels to a local Kansas radio station. Rick recorded a daily almanac of meteorological conditions for the Hesper settlement in Kansas from the age of 14 to 21. He has chased a number of storms and videotaped several tornadoes, even getting within a mile of one, particularly violent tornado.
Rick won the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in a Weathercast, television’s highest honor. The Kansas City Press Club just presented him with the 2014 Heart of America Award. Rick had the honor of meeting the President and Vice President at the White House with 100 of the country’s finest meteorologists to address environmental issues. Rick enjoys meeting new individuals in the community for live remote broadcasts. He enjoys speaking at civic clubs and local schools to share his enthusiasm for the weather with the community.
