Rita was born in Austin, TX. When her parents gave her a tape recorder and a mic to read her stories aloud, she picked up a microphone at a very young age. When she was exposed to a program in high school focusing on radio & television as a freshman, her interest in journalism was sparked.
She developed a passion for covering the news by reading the daily school announcements. When coming to her education, she interned at National Public Radio (NPR) and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Electronic Media from the School of Mass Communications of Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
