Sager announced her diagnosis of breast cancer in the spring of 1999 in an Eyewitness News special. She stated that she was diagnosed with cancer when she was 30 years old, and it was a unique, 1st-person account of the tough decision-making process faced by young women in crisis. In the year 2011, she was diagnosed with another type of cancer, a pre-invasive ovarian cancer in her fallopian tube lining. Also, she was diagnosed with a genetic mutation, BRCA1, which increases the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. However, Sager gained her full recovery, and she inspires women to get screened. At the announcement, she urged women at risk to get screened for genetic mutations that cause these cancers.
Sager holds multiple humanitarian awards throughout her ground-breaking reports and was cited for her volunteer work with the AMS (American Cancer Society). She is dedicated to working extensively with organizations like the Basser Center and TEALWALK, which are committed to assisting women with BRCA-related cancers and ovarian cancer.
