Before joining WESH, she worked as a CBS4 News reporter/fill-in anchor in Miami, where she scored an interview with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush about his decision to ‘explore the chance’ to run for president in 2016, and she reported on the release of Alan Gross and the purpose of the US to normalize ties between the US and Cuba.
Summer was promoted in January 2016 to co-anchor WESH2 News First at Four, Monday to Friday. In addition, Summer covered a number of high-profile national stories, including the 2014 Florida Gubernatorial debate between Gov. Rick Scott and Gov. Charlie Crist, the Thanksgiving Day manhunt for accused killer Paul Michael Merhige, and the trial of George Zimmerman, scoring the first television interview with Rachel Jeantel, the teenager with Trayvon Martin on the phone the night he died.
Before landing her first on-air reporter job in Charlottesville, Virginia, Summer started her career in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she worked as a News Writer and Overnight Producer for the NBC News Channel. Summer went on to report at KTVI in St. Louis, WPEC in West Palm Beach, and KSLA News 12 in Shreveport, Lousiana after Charlottesville, where she anchored newscasts in the morning and afternoon.
Over the years, Summer has partnered with groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, NAACP, Urban League, 100 black men, charter schools, high school literacy projects, and Habitat for Humanity for hundreds of hours of community service. These organizations have been awards of gratitude, but she most loves the moreso letters from and the smiles and embraces of the children she has served.
She is a member of the National Black Journalists Association (NABJ), the Investigative Reporters and Editors Association (IRE), and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. When coming to her education, Summer is a proud graduate of North Carolina University (UNC)-Chapel Hill, where she earned her Journalism degree.
