Tavares spent three years as a breaking news anchor/reporter at WGXA-TV in Central Georgia covering breaking news and severe weather before joining the KNWA News team in Summer 2019. He also worked as a weekend morning anchor/evening reporter at WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio. Tavares began his career as an intern at the Orlando, Florida-based NBC News affiliate.
Tavares graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in political science. Prior to graduation, he worked as a paralegal and public affairs director for a Gainesville-based regional law firm that specialized in criminal defense, personal injury, and wrongful death cases.
Tavares’ training and skills have allowed him to apply his legal knowledge to the coverage of several important news in Northwest Arkansas, including the retrial of Mauricio Torres, the Bella Vista father originally convicted for the rape and murder of his 6-year-old son in Benton County. Tavares also helped cover the funeral procession for deceased Fayetteville police officer Stephen Carr, who was killed in the line of duty by a gunman in December of this year.
Tavares was the emcee for the American Heart Association of Northwest Arkansas’ Cycle Nation event, which aimed to empower the community to take charge of their brain and heart health. Throughout the school year, he honors area teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom through the KNWA/Post Consumer Brands Golden Apple Award program.
The National Association of Black Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Radio Television Digital News Association are among Tavares’ professional affiliations.
Tavares is dedicated to giving back to his community, volunteering with the National Coalition for the Homeless, Children’s Miracle Network, Catholic Charities, United Way, and the Miss America Scholarship Organization, among others.
