Trent grew up in Atlanta and graduated from the University of Georgia with a journalism degree in Broadcast News.

Trent co-anchored the evening newscasts for WIAT-TV in Birmingham before joining the WAFF 48 News team in June 2015. Greenville, South Carolina; Augusta, Georgia; and Fort Myers, Florida have all been lovely stops on his tour of the South. Butler covered a number of hurricanes over his 11 years in Florida.

He was part of the team that produced numerous hours of continuous live coverage of the storm that essentially shut down Birmingham once he arrived at the station.
