Stackel began his television career at WTOP-10, a student-run television studio at the State University of New York (SUNY Oswego), as a college freshman. Asa said that he wanted to cover sports, but for that particular role, he did not get it until he did his second audition. His experience at Oswego’s WTOP-10 trained him well. This is because Asa was able to get on the desk, function behind the scenes, create, work with graphics, write, cover sports, and even call games right from the second semester of his freshman year.
He interned at WWNY-TV, which is located in Watertown, New York, during his second college year. At that very station, while still in school, Stackel was privileged and got a weekend job. He transferred and left his reporting job at WWNY-TV in the year 2015 and began working as a reporter at WNYT. The news writer worked at WNYT as a reporter for three years. Later, Phil Bayly, who was the morning news anchor who had just retired, was picked to take over.
He has received an honor from the Associated Press throughout his career for his work in investigative reporting, feature reporting, and reporting on sports. He was also honored by the Syracuse Press Club as the newcomer of the year.
