Watts is working as the Director of Communications for Botetourt County. Before that, he worked as the chief meteorologist at WDBJ7. He joined WDBJ7 in 1997 as a news photographer, transitioning to the weather department in 2003 and later becoming chief meteorologist in October 2004.
Since Watts started working at WDBJ-TV, he has covered some of the most severe weather incidents in the region. He reported on the Derecho in 2012, floods caused by tropical storms, as well as tornado outbreaks in the years 2018, 2016, 2011, and 2004.
Watts’s interest in predicting severe weather was sparked in the 4th grade when the Flood of ’85 almost put his hometown of Buchanan underwater. He has the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval (AMS). Also, she has earned three Emmy Awards for his work on documenting the Flood of 1985, Hurricane Michael, and the 2012 Derecho.
