He started as a Digital Content Producer and Meteorologist and held those roles for 12 and a half years. In the year 1997, Watts worked behind the scenes at WDBJ-TV. Since Watts started working at WDBJ-TV, he has been the meteorologist for some of the most severe weather incidents in the region. He has reported on the Derecho in the year 2012, tornado outbreaks in the years 2018, 2016, 2011, and 2004, and floods caused by tropical storms.

For 4 years and 8 months (from October 1997 to May 2002), Watts worked for WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia as an editor and news photographer. Watts was in the fourth grade when the 1985 flood almost overwhelmed his hometown of Buchanan. This incident ignited his fascination with predicting severe weather.

Brent has won 3 Emmy Awards for his documentaries on the 1985 flood, the 2012 Derecho, and a special on Hurricane Michael.
