Hirsbrunner is a proud 1997 alumnus of Northern Vermont University (then Lyndon State College) in Vermont, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology, and minors in Astronomy and Physics. In regard to his profession, Hirsbrunner serves at WDBJ 7 News as a meteorologist. He began as a weekend meteorologist at the station and he has forecasted the weather on the noon and morning slots.

Hirsbrunner worked for WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, West Virginia as a Chief Meteorologist for 2 years and 7 months (February 1998 – August 2000), before going to WDBJ-TV. Prior to that, he worked for WVNY-TV in Burlington, Vermont as a Fill-in Meteorologist for 10 months (May 1997 – February 1998). That was actually where he started his career in broadcasting and TV. While in college, Hirsbrunner had an internship with WPRI in Providence, Rhode Island. Hirsbrunner has also developed forecasting skills, working from the New England Shore Line to the mountains of West Virginia. He has won an Emmy Award for his outstanding weather reporting.

Hirsbrunner has wanted to be a meteorologist since he was a child. In the year 1978, when he was only 5 years old, he witnessed the “Storm of the Century,” which had very strong winds and heavy snow. This storm sparked his lifelong passion for weather. Today, he shares his enthusiasm for meteorology with children by visiting local schools frequently.

Leo is actively involved in the AMS – American Meteorological Society and has earned their prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation, the highest honor they award. The CBM designation confirms that holders are well-educated and have been rigorously tested in their knowledge and ability to communicate meteorological information effectively.
