She spent 13 years there working as a news anchor for the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm newscasts. While there, she was heavily involved in children’s issues and earned several community honors and awards for her advocacy and involvement on issues relating to teenage pregnancy, foster care and adoption, working women, and infant mortality.
Also while in North Carolina, she was deeply involved with the North Carolina chapter of “Operation Smile,” traveling with the medical teams to Ecuador and Panama to cover the life-changing surgery they perform on kids with limb and facial deformities. Before going to WGHP, Smoot served at WAVY-TV in Norfolk, Virginia as a News Anchor/Reporter for 3 and half years.
Smoot started her journalism career at a radio station where she served as the award-winning morning news anchor/director. She began her TV career as a news anchor/reporter/producer.
