David Yeomans  Career

He was checking out stacks of meteorology books from the public library and gathering much knowledge by fourth grade and when he was in the fifth grade he became a registered storm spotter and kept climate records for the National Weather Service office.

At the University of Miami, he studied meteorology, and after his first year during summer he went back home to intern in the KXAN weather department under Jim Spencer. He also held an internship at Spectrum News in Austin and CBS4 Miami.

Yeomans helped rebuild the upper-Ninth Ward neighborhood with Habitat for Humanity, serving as an assistant carpenter in New Orleans year 2005 after Hurricane Katrina’s demolition.

Studying the relationship between water vapor in the high levels of the atmosphere and global warming, under world-renowned climate change expert, Dr. Brian Soden, Yeomans became a published undergraduate researcher.

In 2010 he went back to the University of Miami for graduate studies and during this time he was involved in campus broadcasting programs giving daily weather forecasts on WVUM radio, ranked as the No. 1 college radio station by the MTV-U Woodie Awards.

For his master’s thesis, he researched hurricane formation and was a guest scientist aboard an NOAA Hurricane Hunter flight. In 2012, 2013, and 2016 the American Meteorological Society’s annual conventions invited him to present his research.

Yeomans received a Lone Star Emmy Award in 2015 for the First Warning Weather Team’s Summer Weather Outlook and also in 2019 and 2020 he was given a Lone Star Emmy Award for the First Warning Weather University series. In 2016 he was awarded First Place Weathercast by the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters, and Television On-Air Personality of the Year in 2018 by the Alliance for Women in Media.

In Austin, he serves on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Advisory Council. During Yeomans leisure time he volunteers with Meals on Wheels in Austin and also enjoys wake surfing on Lake Austin and mountain biking in the greenbelt.
