Spencer serves at KXAN First Warning Weather as a part-time meteorologist, appearing mostly in the evening. He joined KXAN in the year 1990. He began his semi-retirement on KXAN on March 1, 2021. Before his semi-retirement, he served the station as the Chief Weathercaster. In the history of Austin television, Spencer is the longest-serving weathercaster forecasting Austin and Central Texas weather.

He is on the board of directors of Service Dogs, Inc., and along with KXAN’s mascot Kaxan promotes animal welfare and rescue for many local agencies and non-profit organizations. He is not only a member of the Community Advisory Board for Austin Wildlife Rescue but also a member of the Community Advisory Board for Austin Wildlife Rescue. 

In the longtime partnership of KXAN station with Family Eldercare’s summer fan drive, he has represented KXAN. Spencer worked with the ARC of the Capital Area, an organization dedicated to helping area residents with developmental disabilities.

Spencer credits his life-long fascination with weather to Lindsay, Oklahoma, the heart of the tornado alley where he was raised. He became the first weathercaster on Austin’s first hour-long morning newscast, News 36 First cast in 1990 when he joined KXAN, and became the chief weathercaster, taking over the evening broadcasts till today in 1993.

In 1983 he moved to television at Ada’s KTEN-TV which was an achievement previously he had spent two years at KADA-AM Radio. Spencer became chief weathercaster at KTEN upon graduating college and held the position till he joined KXAN.

Spencer has received three Emmys and has been nominated for several more, he has also received national recognition for his outstanding work. He has also won the Texas Associated Press Best Weathercast award five times and has been voted Austin’s Best Weathercaster 20 times by readers of the Austin Chronicle.

Not only has he been named the Best Weather Reporter in the Austin American Statesman’s Best of the Best Awards in 2018 but he also was named TV Personality of the Year by Austin’s American Women in Radio and Television Chapter five times.

He was named Langford Elementary School’s Mentor of the Year as he has been a mentor in Austin’s Communities in Schools program, he also volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children of Travis County.

For 19 years Spencer co-hosted the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He moderated charitable events regularly for area non-profit organizations, and visited numerous area schools each year, teaching thousands of area students about severe weather safety. 

Spencer has a passion for football officiating as he is a member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials and Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association and for 31 years he has officiated high school football. The American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association are his professional bond.
