His desire to be a TV meteorologist started when he saw Santa on radar at the age of 6 while living in Seattle, Washington. Severe weather got him really hookes. He has forecast the weather in the Bay Area for more than 3 decades. During this time, he has had more than his fair share of storms!
Phillips started his career as a meteorologist at a station in Salisbury, Maryland, after graduating from college. Later on, he made stops in other stations in Gainesville, Providence, and Los Angeles. Ever since he started his career as a meteorologist, he has managed to broadcast extreme weather events, including severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tropical storms.
Phillips began wearing his “trademark” suspenders in 2004 when Hurricane Charley was looming. At the time, he wore the only suspenders he owned during the whole 36-hour coverage. After the storm, most viewers commented that the guy they had watched and trusted was the one wearing suspenders. His Rule #7, Don’t freak out unless I’m freaking out, we’re fine, has become a motto numerous Bay Area residents live by during hurricane season.
Phillips and his family enjoy giving back to the community. Each holiday season, they arrange a “hot chocolate” fundraiser to benefit local charities. Over the years, his family and friends have collected tens of thousands of dollars for the “Sunshine Foundation”, “Feeding Tampa Bay”, and “Children’s Miracle Network,” among other worthwhile organizations.
