Staples discovered his love for the weather when he was young. Every morning before school, he watched his local TV stations in Roanoke-Lynchburg, Virginia. Then, he would tell his classmates what the weather would be like that day and in the coming days. In middle school, his teacher, Ms. Helen Howell, asked what they wanted to do after high school. Dustin said that he aspired to be a meteorologist.

After saying that in class, he got asked to do the weather forecast each day for the afternoon and morning announcements over the loudspeaker. He kept doing the announcements, and some of his friends joined in. Together, they made the morning announcements into a daily broadcast. They started this in high school and became known as the “WMHS8 Stars”.

As high school was ending, Staples and his friends went their own paths. Staples got a job offer at his local TV station, BTW21, during his senior year. He became the Weatherman there. After finishing high school, he went to college for further studies. Even while at university, he kept working for BTW21 from home for 5 years and 6 months. During his time at Radford University, a friend called him “Mr. Radford” because he was very active on campus. Even now, when he visits his old school, people still call him “Mr. Radford” or “Mr. Weatherman.”
