Eric Braate Career
Braate serves at WNBC as a Weather Executive Producer. Before joining the station, he served at KPRC Channel 2 as the staff meteorologist and the executive producer of weather. He joined KPRC for the 2nd time in June 2011 and departed in August 2021. From 2007 – 2008, he worked for KPRC as a weekend meteorologist. As a weekday morning meteorologist, he moved to Graham Media’s sister station, WDIV-TV, in Detroit in 2008.
Eric performed a combination of work on Channel 2 in front of and behind the camera. Depending on the shift he’s filling, he was seen giving the weather forecast every day of the week at any time of day. He also pinched hits on traffic duty on weekday mornings when required. He has worked as a reporter and from time to time has covered community activities live from the field, too.
Eric had a career choice that was fascinating and unique. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, after growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Before taking a dramatic turn to indulge his passion for meteorology, he worked for many years as an engineer for FMC Corporation and General Electric. He left his job on a leap of faith, sold his house, and began college.
In Greenville, Mississippi, Eric landed his first television job at WXVT-TV while still a graduate student. He went on to work at WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Florida, and WITI-TV in Milwaukee after securing his degree before joining Channel 2.
Eric likes being involved outside while he isn’t working. He has completed more than 30 marathons and several triathlons, including three full IRONMAN triathlons as an avid runner and biker. In 2017, to raise funds and money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, he participated in the IRONMAN World Championship Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. Over $120,000 was raised by his campaign.
When coming to his education, he is a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he spent 2 years and earned an emphasis on operational meteorology and a master’s degree in geoscience. Ever since he has not looked back.
He likes to mix his love of running with another passion—travel. Marathons have been performed in locations big and small. In every state and every continent, including Antarctica, his ambition is to eventually run a marathon. I hope his legs will hold up long enough to make it happen. Painting, cooking, baking, reading, and spending quality time with family and friends are his other passions.
