In recognition of his columns that focused on then-Senator Barack Obama in the context of his first presidential campaign, he was awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary.
His career in journalism began at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976. Later on, in 1980, he joined The Washington Post where he worked his way up through the ranks and was first a city hall reporter at the paper. From there he became the assistant city editor; a South America correspondent based in Buenos Aires, Argentina; London bureau chief; foreign editor; and, most recently, the assistant managing editor of the paper’s Style section. In 2005, he started writing columns for the opinion page of the paper. In addition, he also writes a twice-a-week column on politics and culture and conducts weekly online conversations with readers.
Furthermore, he is a 2021 honoree of the Larry Foster Award from The Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication. Additionally, he is part of the fifth class of Larry Foster Award honorees, which honors professionals who “exemplify the importance of truthful communication with the public.” In 2009, he won a Pulitzer Prize. He also served as its chair from 2017 to 2018. He is a board member of the IWMF (International Women’s Media Foundation) and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
