Holt works for NBC News as a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News. He has also been appearing on MSNBC. For nineteen years, he served at CBS as a reporter, anchor, and international correspondent. He was hired as a reporter for WCBS-TV in New York City in 1981.

He went ahead to become a reporter and weekend anchor on KNXT in Los Angeles in 1982 and the following year he went back to WCBS-TV and served as a reporter and weekend anchor. In addition, he moved to WBBM-TV in Chicago where he served as an evening anchor for over fourteen years.

Furthermore, he was also commended by his fellow journalist who said that he performed admirably in challenging Trump when he said that he originally opposed the war in Iraq, which was proven to be a false statement. More to that, he was also commended by The Washington Post for making it clear that stop and frisk were ruled unconstitutional in New York when Trump said it wasn’t.

Holt serves at NBC News as a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News. He has also been appearing on MSNBC since the year 2000. In 2003, he resumed his full-time duties at NBC News and he became NBC Nightly News’s substitute anchor. Following the death of David Bloom his co-anchor, he became the only anchor of Weekend Today.

In his career as a journalist, he has not only served as a desk anchor but also reported extensively from troubled spots around the world including Northern Ireland, Iraq, Haiti, El Salvador, and Somalia. He stepped in permanently in Brian William’s role as the anchor of the weekday edition on May 9, 2007. Furthermore, he currently serves as the anchor of NBC’s Dateline. Not only did he moderate the presidential debates in 2016, but he also interviewed President Donald Trump in 2017, where fellow journalists said that he asked tough but appropriate questions.

Apart from his primary responsibilities at NBC News, he also served as a sports desk reporter for NBC Sports coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics, host of Dateline on ID, an edition of Dateline NBC shown on the Investigation Discovery network, and also hosted a special for The History Channel about the 9/11 conspiracy theories. Additionally, he narrated a documentary that concerned actual crystal skulls on the Sci-Fi Channel.

He filled in as the weekday anchor in 2013 when  Brian Williams had to leave for knee replacement surgery. Additionally, he also permanently replaced Williams as NBC Nightly News anchor after he was suspended for allegedly exaggerating a story about the Iraq War.

In January 2016, he moderated the Democratic presidential candidates’ debate alongside a panel of NBC political reporters. Additionally, on September 26, 2016, he also moderated the first presidential debate. During this time Holt was a registered Republican and Donald Trump, a presidential candidate stated that this was “a very unfair system” because “Lester is a Democrat.” However, he later changed his party affiliation to independent in 2018. Donald Trump stated that Holt had done a good job after the debate ended.
