Mathis joined Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in 2007 when she finished her education at Mt. Juliet High School. In 2011, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Media Studies. In 2011, she joined Mississippi State University where she graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology. While at MTSU, she was a weather anchor for the student-run TV station during college.

She still recalls the fatal April 1998 tornado outbreak all over Middle Tennessee that ignited her fascination with meteorology. While in high school, she secured her initial broadcasting job landing a job at the Bear News Network.
After graduating college, Mathis debuted her career in Jackson, Tennessee at WBBJ where she was an anchor, producer, and forecaster. She worked there for 2 years before relocating to Huntsville, Alabama to work for WAAY. In Huntsville, she held various positions including executive producer, meteorologist, and reporter.
