Simpson serves at WHNT News 19 as a Chief Meteorologist. Before joining WHNT News 19, Jason worked as the morning meteorologist at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham from 2004 to 2011. He worked alongside longtime Chief Meteorologist James Spann. Simpson started his career working part-time at WTOK-TV in Meridian, Mississippi, while still in college. He worked at WTOK-TV and ABC 17 (KMIZ) in Columbia, Missouri, after college.

Jason has written on a number of weather disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards. Jason was on the air on April 27, 2011, and experienced firsthand the devastation in various parts of Alabama. He volunteered in ravaged areas to help people recover after the hurricane, and where he couldn’t go, he sent supplies.

In 2007, Jason received the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal from the American Meteorological Society for his work in television weather. He’s been named Best Weathercaster in Alabama by the Associated Press, and he’s been nominated for five EMMY Awards. He was named Best Weathercaster in Alabama by the Associated Press, was nominated for five Emmys, and won one in 2013. When coming to his education, Simpson earned a degree in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University.

Jason is a strong supporter of science education in the classroom, and his “ABCs of Weather” series, which he developed for the Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative, was instrumental in developing a curriculum for elementary and middle school science classes. Throughout the year, he also makes several school visits and holds homeschooling class sessions.
